Organic Complete Fertilizer Recipe

This is an adapted version of Steve Solomon’s (founder of Territorial Seeds) Complete Fertilizer from his book Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades.

John and I have been using this slow-release fertilizer for years in our garden. We use it in the veggie garden. We use it in every planting hole for each new plant introduction to our garden. And we use it in every transplant hole as we shift numerous plants around in our landscape design.

When used in combination with a healthy serving of homemade compost or well-aged manure, the plants are provided with the best possible kick start in your garden.

The Recipe:

4 parts alfalfa meal
1 part dolomite lime
1 part rock phosphate
½ part kelp meal

Recipe is by volume, not by weight. Combine ingredients in a suitable container with a tight-fitting lid. Mix well. Store in a cool, dark place.

To use:

  • For seeds – make a deep furrow, sprinkle in the fertilizer, cover with some soil, sow seeds and cover with
         more soil.
  • For seedling transplants – mix a handful of fertilizer into about a shovelful of soil below the seedling.
  • For transplanting mature plants – mix 1 cup (250 ml) of fertilizer into the transplant hole along with some
         compost or well-aged manure.
