Description

An herbaceous, rhizomatous perennial with a low, slow-spreading, clump-forming growth habit. Handsome, soft-textured, mid-green leaves are deeply veined and pointed. Upright spikes of pretty pink, bottlebrush flowers appear above the foliage in late spring through mid-summer. Good cut flowers, Attracts bees and butterflies.

This plant genus which was first recorded as Polygonum then re-classified as Persicaria bistorta, has most recently been re-classified as Bistorta officinalis in the last few decades.

While most of the species in this genus (Bistorta / Persicaria) prefer moist conditions, this particular species does well in drier soil conditions. No noticeable pest or disease problems, including slugs and snails.
