Yucca filamentosaBoy, has it turned warm! If you haven’t gotten the garden chores done by 10 a.m., you are in a full meltdown as you struggle to finish.

Mind you, there have been a couple of days with relatively stiff breezes but all they are doing is pushing the warm air around. It is still hot.

The yuccas are happy with the heat. They are in full bloom right now. Quite stellar looking, actually with their towering flower stems adorned with a multitude of creamy white flowers.

I have Yucca filamentosa, commonly known as Adam’s needle, in my front border bed. John has the variegated one, Yucca filamentosa ‘Golden Sword’ in the back garden. The variegated one has no bloom as yet…and it may skip a year, which yuccas sometimes do.

Also in bloom right now are the daylilies…Hemerocallis spp. Pictured here is ‘Orange Vols’ and what I think may be ‘Blueberry Sundae’. We received both of these as gifts from a friend who had forgotten their names. So…after doing a bit of Internet searching, I am confident I have ‘Orange Vols’ rightly identified. Not so sure about ‘Blueberry Sundae’ but the photos look about right and I like the name. Good enough until I come across another photo that shows it is another Hemerocallis cultivar.

Until next week…stay cool in the garden. And make sure you and your plants stay hydrated.
