Autumn, Garlic and National Organic Week
by Leslie Cox; Saturday, September 27, 2014
Autumn has arrived, time to plant your garlic and it is the tail end of National Organic Week. Gardening season is not over yet!
Had to know autumn was creeping up. Days were getting shorter and temperatures have been dipping. Have unearthed my sweatshirts from the depths of last spring. Throwing on a plain ol’ T-shirt was just not cutting it in the morning anymore.
But I refuse to let John fire up the woodstove. Save the wood for when it really gets cold. And besides, not all of my houseplants have made it back inside from the front porch and they will need at least a week of unheated house to acclimatize to indoor conditions again.
Quote of the Week
Preserving Damson Plums
by Leslie Cox; Friday, September 19, 2014
It has been a busy time preserving the 50 pounds (22.5 kg) of Damson plums our friends generously gifted to us. Made a few batches of jam and then put the rest into pint (500 ml) jars, added a tablespoon of amaretto and filled the jar with a hot syrup. Yum! Oh…I did reserve just enough fruits to make John a Plum Torte. Still had a few left over so threw those into a freezer bag for smoothies sometime down the road.
Celebrating National Indoor Plant Week!
by Leslie Cox; Thursday, September 18, 2014
September 15 – 19 has been declared Indoor Plant Week! A whole week set aside to celebrate the good things indoor plants lend to our living and working spaces.
Terribly fitting since I have just started to bring my houseplants indoors after their summer holiday on the front porch…or “The Office” as John calls it. One of our favourite places to sit and enjoy a morning coffee or an afternoon tea.
