This week in the garden…
by Leslie Cox; Saturday; December 30, 2017
Ran the gamut this week, weather-wise. Overnight lows below zero degrees Celsius, then above zero for a couple of nights before dropping below zero once again. Rain, then 5 cm or so of snow, then rain again, and finally about 8 cm of snow on the 29th. Just figures through Christmas week, doesn’t it?!
The garden is definitely all white and looking rather frozen after all of this. Some of the shrubs have had the snow knocked off. Thankfully, the rope ensnaring the hibiscus branches is doing its job in keeping them decently upright. Fingers crossed this poor shrub/tree will not suffer any further damage after all it suffered last winter. The rest of the shrubs and plants look quite beautiful with the sun catching the snow crystals…turning them into hundreds of millions of sparkling jewels.
I have filled my bird feeders with seed this last week…something I only do when there is snow on the ground. The rest of the year I want our feathered friends to scrounge on the ground and around the plants, eating weed seeds and insects.
Unfortunately, having the small birds flying up into the tree to reach the feeder in the front garden attracted the attention of a Coopers hawk. It caught our attention too when he actually flew into our front room window! What a crash, but thankfully, it did not break our over-large window!
Also, thankfully, the hawk did not catch any of the songbirds. I would rather it concentrate on the rodent population…

Winter. There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.
In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other.
Only in winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches
when you can savor belonging to yourself.
