Elk Falls Provincial Park in Campbell River is a lovely place. Here is a photo of the Falls. Very spectacular. Can you see the suspension bridge in the background? (Hint: Look across the crown of the smaller trees in the background. You can just make out the silver bridge against the blue sky.) If you are not afraid of heights, particularly when you can see through the grids to the ground below, the view of the Falls from the bridge presents a different perspective.

Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow.
The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.

Remembering those who served in the Great Wars

“Freedom is never free.”

Papaver orientalis

On this day I am thinking of my father, Hugh Ferguson…my uncle, Bob Ferguson…and my uncle, Jack Ferguson.

All three served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. My dad was stationed on the ground in England. My Uncle Bob was stationed in Toronto, training fighter pilots. My Uncle Jack was a Spitfire Mk IX pilot with No. 401 Squadron, stationed at Biggin Hill. He was shot down over the English Channel on August 17, 1942…two days prior to the Dieppe Raid…whilst taking part in Circus 204, escorting a number of B17 Fortress bombers.

I also honour many more of my relatives…ones who I am only now unraveling their heroic war contributions at Dieppe, Vimy Ridge, and other battles of WWI and WWII.

A male Anna’s Hummingbird, Calypte anna, has claimed our front porch for his own. In typical fashion for this hummingbird species, he fiercely guards the bird feeder for his dining pleasure…and his alone.

He usually rules his territory from the tip of a woven jute butterfly I have tacked on the wall under the overhang. Can you spot him in the larger photo?
