It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas around our house now. The new, energy efficient, outdoor lights are lighting up the eave on the front of the house. Rope lights are wrapping the evergreen boughs draped on the porch railings. Multi-coloured mini lights festoon the inside of the windows, the fireplace mantel and various other parts of the house are brightening up the interior décor…effectively making light of the grey days of winter.

Christmas Village scene

One of my very favourite Christmas decorations, our miniature village, is all set up with the train making its rounds around the exterior. There are a total of eighteen assorted chalets, ski lodges, music shops, book emporiums, toy shop, flower shops, grocery, fire station, cafes, tree forts, churches and cathedrals with figurines, animals and trees.

This village scene of ours reminds me of the special annual trip to downtown Victoria when my mom would take my sister, brother and me to see Eaton’s and the Hudson’s Bay department store windows all decked out in their holiday displays. Those scenes were so very magical for me with all the lights and moving parts.

And judging by the faces of friends and family, young and old, who drop in to visit through the holidays…re-creating a precious memory from my past in setting up our Christmas village awakens some of that old holiday magic in them.
