Admittedly, pruning clematis can be confusing. There is definitely a right way and a wrong way. Add in the fact all clematis are divided in three categories…and one of those categories is split into two groups…and each category / group has specialized pruning requirements.
Well…it is small wonder many gardeners are scratching their heads.
The clincher is: you really do have to remember the name of your clematis after it is planted in your garden. This will enable you to look up which category, and therefore, which pruning technique you need to employ. How you prune your clematis will greatly affect how well it blooms.
However…if you cannot remember the name of your clematis, don’t panic. There is a way of determining its category fairly accurately by when it comes into bloom and for how long.
Everything is explained in How To: Prune a Clematis in the How To section under In the Garden on the menu bar. (Quick link here.)
