Did you know…
…there may be some positive news buried in all the negative news about climate change?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the United States, “farmers in some regions may benefit from the earlier onset of spring and from a longer warm season that is suitable for growing crops.”
The results of their studies are pointing towards better growth and production in crops and other plants due to the higher levels of carbon dioxide. The tested plant species also appeared to show some tolerance to drought conditions.
However…
…it is not all good news. As well as the crops performed in the warmer growing conditions, so did the weeds, invasive plant species, insect pests and some diseases.
And, farmers in areas that must already rely more on irrigation water for their crops because of a low annual rainfall amount, will find it increasingly difficult to source water to irrigate their crops and plants.
Looking to the long-term picture…
…these short-term benefits from the crops and plants we grow will eventually reverse themselves to the detriment of our food production and all of the other benefits we receive from the plant kingdom.
Everyone must really start paying attention to how our planet is reacting to the impact of human activities, if they aren’t already. And do not be discouraged that you, alone, can affect change in your environment. Instead, try to encourage your family members and friends to follow your lead. Change always starts at home…and it does grow.
